A pipe burst, the basement took on water, or the box in the corner sat under a leak all winter. The family tapes were in it.
Here’s the encouraging part, and it’s a real contrast with the other half of my work: tape handles water far better than a hard drive does. A water-damaged hard drive is a race against corrosion on precision parts. A wet VHS tape is a plastic ribbon with a coating on it, and plastic doesn’t corrode.
What it does do is grow mold, and that’s where the urgency lives.
The clock is mold, not water
Wet tape in a warm room grows mold in days, not weeks. The binder holding the magnetic particles is organic, and wet organic material in the dark is exactly what mold wants.
So the timeline is: water itself, largely survivable. Water plus a week, a mold problem on top of a water problem. Water plus a month in a warm basement, and you may be looking at growth that’s bonded the tape pack together.
If your tapes got wet, this is a this-week project.
What to do, in order
1. Get them out of the water and out of the box. Cardboard wicks moisture and holds it against the cassettes. Sleeves and cardboard sleeves come off.
2. Do not put them in a sealed bag. This is where the advice diverges sharply from the hard drive version. On a drive you bag it damp to stop mineral deposits forming on the platters. On tape, sealing wet plastic in a bag builds a personal greenhouse and you get mold in 48 hours.
3. Don’t apply heat. No hairdryer, no oven, no sunny windowsill, no radiator. Heat warps the shell, deforms the tape pack, and accelerates the binder chemistry you’re trying to preserve. Room temperature, moving air.
4. Stand them upright, spaced apart, somewhere dry with airflow. A fan in the room, a dehumidifier if you have one. Not pointed directly at them at full blast — just circulation.
5. If the water was dirty, that changes things. Flood water, sewage, or river water leaves contaminants that dry into the tape pack. Tapes that were in clean water can simply be dried. Tapes that were in dirty water need rinsing with distilled water before drying — and that’s a job worth handing to someone rather than experimenting with.
6. Don’t play them. Not to check. A wet or damp tape run through a deck deposits moisture and contamination through the entire tape path, and the tape itself is at its most fragile when the pack is swollen.

Why tapes survive this
Three things work in your favor.
The shell is a decent shield. Cassettes aren’t watertight, but they’re not open either. Tapes that were briefly submerged often have a dry core with water only having reached the outer edges of the pack.
Magnetic recording doesn’t wash off. The pattern is embedded in particles bonded to the ribbon. Water doesn’t erase it, doesn’t demagnetize it, and doesn’t dissolve it. The recording is chemically indifferent to having been wet.
The failure modes are mechanical, not informational. What goes wrong is the pack sticking together, the shell warping, or mold growing — all of which are about getting the tape to play, not about whether the recording still exists. That’s a much better class of problem.
What the outcome usually looks like
Dried promptly, clean water: usually a normal conversion. Possibly some dropouts where the pack was in contact with standing water at the edges.
Dried promptly, dirty water: rinse and dry first, then convert. Expect some edge damage. Most of the footage typically comes through.
Sat wet for weeks: now it’s a mold job as well, with the odds described in the mold article. Still frequently recoverable, more work, more variable.
Sat wet for months and the pack is fused: honestly, sometimes. Separating a bonded pack risks pulling coating off. I’ll tell you after inspection rather than guessing now.
Shell warped but tape intact: trivial. The tape moves into a donor shell — same repair as a cracked case.
If it’s a lot of tapes
Flooded basements tend to produce boxes, not single tapes. If you’re looking at thirty wet cassettes and can’t deal with all of them at once, the triage order is:
- Anything irreplaceable and one-of-a-kind — weddings, funerals, home movies of people who’ve died
- Anything that was in dirty water
- Everything else
Get those first ones dry and out of the humidity first. Commercial movie tapes at the bottom of the box are not worth your weekend.
The bottom line
Wet tapes are in much better shape than wet drives, and the recording itself doesn’t care that it got wet. What kills them is sitting damp long enough to grow mold, or being dried with heat. Air-dry at room temperature, don’t bag them, don’t play them, and treat it as a project for this week rather than this year.
