The VCR ate it. Or it fell off a shelf and the case cracked. Or you opened the box and found a cassette with a loop of tape hanging out and a tangle of it wound around itself.
It looks like the end. It almost never is, and understanding why makes the repair obvious: the recording lives on the tape ribbon. The plastic shell is a container. Damage to the container is an inconvenience. Damage to the ribbon is the only thing that costs you footage — and even then, only where it’s actually damaged.
Cracked or broken shell
The easiest one. The cassette housing is two pieces of plastic held together with five screws, and it’s not doing anything except holding the reels in alignment.
If the shell is cracked, snapped, or missing a corner, the tape inside is usually untouched. The fix is a shell transplant: unscrew a donor cassette, move the reels across with the tape pack undisturbed, reassemble. Ten minutes and the tape plays normally.
Donor shells are free — any thrift-store VHS of a movie nobody wants is a perfectly good donor. This is one of the more satisfyingly simple repairs there is.
The VCR ate it
The classic. The machine grabbed the tape, wound it around the capstan or the head drum, and now there’s a crumpled mass inside the machine and a cassette that won’t wind.
Don’t yank it. Pulling hard is what turns a creased tape into a snapped one, and it can also stretch the ribbon — and stretched tape distorts the recording in a way that isn’t fixable, unlike a clean break.
If the tape is still in the machine, the right move is to power the VCR off, open it up if you can do that calmly, and unwind it gently by hand from whatever it’s wrapped around, then wind the slack back into the cassette by turning the reel with a finger or a pencil.
What you’ll usually be left with is a section of tape with creases and wrinkles in it. That section will show distortion when it plays — but only that section. A tape that was eaten in one spot loses seconds, not the whole recording.
Snapped tape
A clean break gets spliced. The two ends are aligned and joined with splicing tape on the non-magnetic side, and the tape plays through the join.
You lose a small amount — typically a fraction of a second to a couple of seconds around the break, depending on how ragged the ends are. Everything on both sides is intact.
The one thing not to use is ordinary sticky tape. Household adhesive is too thick, it squeezes out at the edges, and it’ll gum up the tape path and stick the pack together over time. Proper splicing tape is thin, dimensionally stable, and doesn’t ooze.
Spilled reels
Tape unwound outside the shell and tangled. Frustrating, rarely fatal.
It winds back in. The risks are creasing the ribbon while handling it and getting oils and dirt from your fingers onto the recorded surface — so handle it by the edges, work slowly, and don’t let it kink. A crease is a permanent glitch at that point in the playback; a smooth rewind isn’t.
Broken tapes inspected free. Repair is part of the job, not an upcharge.
The one that actually costs you: stretched tape
Worth separating from the rest, because it’s the failure people underestimate.
If a tape has been pulled taut — yanked out of a machine, or wound under too much tension — the ribbon physically stretches. The magnetic pattern stretches with it, and playback of a stretched section is warped and jittery in a way no amount of cleanup fully corrects.
That’s why the advice on a jammed tape is always to stop and go slowly. A tape you carefully untangled over ten minutes plays better than one you freed in ten seconds.
Should you repair it yourself?
If you’re comfortable with small screws and patient hands, a shell transplant is genuinely a beginner job, and there are decent guides for it.
Where I’d suggest not doing it yourself:
- The tape is also moldy. Different problem, different handling, and mold contaminates whatever you play it on.
- It’s irreplaceable and there’s only one. A wedding, a funeral, someone who’s gone. The repair isn’t hard, but there’s no second attempt if it goes wrong.
- The tape is brittle. Old tape that’s degraded snaps again as soon as it’s under tension. That needs careful handling rather than confidence.
And if you do repair it yourself, capture it immediately afterward. A repaired tape is not a tape to put back on a shelf for another five years — splices and transplanted shells are for getting one good playback, not for long-term storage.
The bottom line
Cracked shells are a ten-minute swap. Eaten tapes lose seconds, not everything. Snapped tapes splice. Spilled tape winds back in. The only genuinely destructive outcomes are stretching the ribbon by pulling hard and creasing it by rushing — both of which happen in the first thirty seconds, before anyone’s thought it through.
