Mold on VHS Tapes: What's Salvageable and What Isn't

You open the box and there it is: a white, gray, or greenish fuzz along the edge of the tape, visible through the cassette window. Sometimes it looks like dust. Sometimes it’s unmistakably growing.

That’s mold, it’s extremely common in Pittsburgh basements and attics, and the good news is that most moldy tapes are still convertible. The bad news is that a moldy tape needs to be handled very differently from a clean one, and playing it wrong can wreck both the tape and the deck.

Why tapes grow mold

Magnetic tape is a plastic base coated in a binder — essentially a polymer glue — holding the magnetic particles. That binder is organic and absorbs moisture from the air.

Put a tape in a basement that swings between humid summers and cold winters for thirty years and you’ve built a small, dark, humid environment with food in it. Attics do the same thing from the other direction.

Mold grows on the tape edges first, because that’s where air reaches when the pack is wound. That’s why it’s visible through the window as a fuzzy line along the edge of the tape pack rather than a general haze.

Do not play a moldy tape

This is the important part, and it’s the one thing that turns a recoverable tape into a lost one.

Mold spreads through a deck. Running a moldy tape through a VCR deposits spores on the heads, the rollers, the capstan, and the tape path. The next tape you play picks it up. One moldy tape run carelessly can contaminate a machine and then everything that machine touches.

It also damages the tape. Mold binds the layers of the tape pack together. Forcing that apart at playback speed tears the magnetic coating off the base — and coating that’s been ripped off is gone permanently, unlike most other tape problems.

And it can jam the transport. Enough growth binds the pack solid, the mechanism stalls, and the tape gets chewed.

So: don’t put it in a VCR to see how bad it is. That check is exactly what causes the damage.

What to do with a moldy tape

  1. Isolate it. Separate moldy tapes from clean ones. Spores travel; a moldy tape stored against a clean one for a year makes two moldy tapes.
  2. Keep them dry, not sealed. A sealed plastic bag traps moisture and encourages more growth. A cardboard box in a dry, room-temperature space is better.
  3. Don’t try to clean it with household products. Alcohol, vinegar, and cleaning sprays all attack the binder. Any of them can dissolve the layer holding your recording to the tape.
  4. Don’t run it, even once.
  5. Tell whoever’s converting them, upfront. Mold changes the process and the sequencing, and a shop that doesn’t know will run it on the same deck as everyone else’s tapes.

How moldy tapes get handled properly

At my bench, mold gets removed mechanically, not chemically. The tape is wound slowly under controlled tension while the mold is lifted off the edges and surface, then it’s captured on a deck that gets cleaned afterward rather than being the same deck the rest of the day’s work runs on.

That takes time, and it’s why a moldy tape isn’t the same job as a clean one. It’s also why some places just refuse them — running mold through your equipment is a real cost, not a squeamishness thing.

What determines whether it’s salvageable

Surface mold on the edges — usually fine. This is the common case. The growth sits on the tape pack’s edge, the recorded area underneath is intact, and once it’s cleaned off the tape plays. Most of what I see is this.

Mold across the tape surface — often still workable, but expect visible dropouts where the coating was affected.

Mold that has bonded the pack solid — sometimes. If layers have effectively glued together, separating them may pull coating with them. Slow, careful work, and an honest maybe.

Coating already lost — no. If the magnetic layer has separated from the base, that footage doesn’t exist anymore. No process recovers it, and anyone telling you otherwise isn’t being straight with you.

While you’re at it

If one tape in a box has mold, check the rest. And check the box’s home — a basement corner that grew mold on tapes is going to do it again to whatever’s still down there.

Mold is also a signal about storage generally. Tapes that lived somewhere humid enough to grow it have been aging faster than tapes in a closet upstairs, which means the decay clock is further along than the calendar suggests.

The bottom line

Fuzzy white growth on the tape edge is mold, it’s normal for basement storage, and most of those tapes still convert fine. The one thing that ruins them is putting them in a VCR to check — that both tears coating off the tape and contaminates the machine for everything after it.
