Your Mac won’t start. Maybe it’s a folder with a question mark, maybe a prohibitory sign, maybe a black screen and a fan. The files you need are on it.
Before anything else, you need to answer one question, because it determines whether this is a routine recovery or a genuinely hard limit: what year is the Mac, and does it have Apple silicon or a T2 chip?
The dividing line
Macs before roughly 2018 — Intel machines without a T2 security chip. The internal drive is a normal SSD or hard drive, usually removable, and unless FileVault was turned on, the data on it is readable in any other machine. These are ordinary recoveries.
Macs from 2018 onward — anything with a T2 chip, and every Apple silicon Mac (M1 through the current generation). Here the storage is soldered to the logic board, and it is encrypted at the hardware level by a key that lives in the Secure Enclave on that specific board. This happens whether or not you ever enabled FileVault.
That second group changes the math completely.
Why soldered and encrypted matters so much
On an Apple silicon or T2 Mac, the NAND flash chips are not a drive in any useful sense. They’re storage that only that logic board can decrypt.
If the machine’s problem is the screen, the keyboard, the battery, a port, or the power supply — fine. The board is alive, the data is reachable, and it’s usually recoverable.
If the logic board itself has failed — liquid damage to the wrong area, a dead Secure Enclave, a failed SoC — the data is not recoverable by anyone. Not by me, not by Apple, not by a lab with a cleanroom. The chips still hold the bits; the only thing that could turn them back into files is gone.
This is the single most important thing to understand about modern Macs, and most owners don’t learn it until the day it matters. It’s also the strongest argument for backups that exists.
Things worth trying first, in order
All non-destructive. Stop at the first one that works.
- Different power adapter and cable. Sounds trivial. Isn’t.
- SMC / NVRAM reset on Intel Macs. Harmless and occasionally fixes a no-boot outright.
- Recovery Mode — Command-R at startup on Intel, hold the power button on Apple silicon. If Recovery loads, the board and storage are alive, which is very good news.
- Disk Utility First Aid — with a caveat. If Recovery loads, First Aid can repair a damaged APFS container. But it repairs by discarding what it can’t reconcile, the same as CHKDSK does on Windows. On a drive that’s physically failing, that’s the wrong move. Use it if the machine has just been misbehaving; skip it if the drive has been slow, noisy, or throwing errors.
- Target Disk Mode / Share Disk Mode. The genuinely useful one. On Intel, hold T at startup and the Mac appears as an external drive on another Mac. On Apple silicon, boot into Recovery and use Share Disk. If this works, copy your data off immediately — this is your window.

FileVault, again
Even on an older removable-drive Mac, FileVault will stop a recovery cold without the password or recovery key.
Check for the key before assuming anything: it may be in the iCloud account tied to the Mac, printed and filed away, or saved during setup. Same situation as BitLocker on the Windows side — with the key it’s a normal job, without it there’s nothing anyone can do.
What I can take on
Older Macs with removable drives. Pull the drive, image it, recover from the image. APFS and HFS+ both parse fine. A 2012 MacBook Pro whose drive is failing is a standard job.
Newer Macs where the board is alive. If the machine powers on and Share Disk or Target Disk Mode works, getting data off is straightforward and often something I can walk you through yourself for free.
Where I’ll tell you no: an Apple silicon or T2 Mac with a dead logic board. I’ll confirm the board is genuinely gone rather than taking your word for it, and if it is, I’ll say so plainly instead of billing you to find out. Board-level microsoldering shops can sometimes revive a board enough to boot once — that’s a specialist referral, not my bench, and it’s worth trying before writing the data off.
The bottom line
On a Mac from 2017 or earlier, a dead machine usually doesn’t mean dead data — the drive comes out and reads normally. On anything newer, the data lives and dies with the logic board. If your newer Mac still powers on at all, use Share Disk mode today rather than waiting to see if the problem gets worse.
