When people call about a failed drive, the second question is almost always “how much” — and the third is “how long.” The second one gets answered everywhere. The third usually gets a shrug.
Here’s the honest version, including the part most labs don’t explain: the timeline is mostly set by how fast your drive can be read, and that’s not something anyone can promise up front.
The single biggest factor: imaging speed
Nearly every recovery starts by copying the drive sector by sector to a healthy one. That image is what the actual recovery work happens against.
A healthy 2 TB drive images in about four to six hours. That’s the floor.
A drive with bad sectors doesn’t read at full speed. Every weak sector means retries, timeouts, and head resets. The same 2 TB drive with a degrading surface might image in eighteen hours, or three days, or eight days if it has to be done in careful passes with rest periods in between. There’s no way to know which until it’s on the bench and reading.
This is why an honest answer to “how long” starts as a range and narrows after evaluation.
Realistic ranges by case type
Logical recovery — 2 to 5 business days. Deleted files, a format, a corrupted file system, a lost partition. The drive is mechanically fine, so imaging runs at full speed and the work is rebuilding structures. Most of these are done inside a week.
Degraded drive — 4 to 10 business days. Bad sectors, slow reads, intermittent detection. Imaging is the long pole here and it’s genuinely unpredictable. A drive that’s only lightly degraded lands near the front of that range. One that needs multiple careful passes can run past it, and I’ll tell you when that becomes clear rather than letting the date quietly slip.
Light physical — 5 to 12 business days. PCB failure, a dead USB bridge controller, a seized motor. Add the time to source a matching donor board, which is usually a few days and occasionally longer for uncommon models. Once the drive is reading again, it’s a normal imaging job from there.
Cleanroom cases — 2 to 4 weeks. These I refer out, and the labs I send people to are usually quoting two to three weeks standard. Head stack replacements are slow work and the queue at a real cleanroom is real.

What adds time that isn’t the drive
- Shipping. Two or three days each direction on a mail-in case. Pittsburgh locals who drop off in person skip both legs, which is often the difference between one week and two.
- The evaluation itself. Usually same day or next day once the drive is in hand.
- Your approval. Nothing starts until you’ve seen the quote and said go. If a quote sits in your inbox over a weekend, that’s three days of the clock that had nothing to do with the drive.
- The return copy. Getting recovered data onto a destination drive and verified takes a few hours, more for large sets.
When it’s genuinely urgent
If you’re up against a real deadline — a court date, a business that’s down, a deadline that doesn’t move — say so in your first message. It changes how I sequence the work. I’d rather reorder my bench than have you find out on day six that the timeline was never going to work.
What I won’t do is promise 24-hour turnaround on a physically failing drive. Rushing a degraded drive means fewer imaging passes and more aggressive reads, and that trades your recovery odds for a date on a calendar. If a lab quotes you a guaranteed overnight turnaround before they’ve seen the drive, that’s a pricing red flag wearing a different hat.
The bottom line
Most cases land in one to two weeks door to door. Logical jobs are faster, physical jobs are slower, and the honest range narrows once the drive is actually on the bench. Anyone giving you a firm date before evaluation is guessing.
